Future Museum is a joint research project by Vienna-based MUSEUM BOOSTER GmbH and Fraunhofer IAO in Stuttgart. The two-year research programme (from December 2019 to November 2021) focuses on the digitalisation of museums, trends in the visitor journey and storytelling in museums.
On 6 December 2019, MUSEUM BOOSTER and Fraunhofer IAO held the first meeting of the Future Museum project partners at Fraunhofer Forum in Berlin. During the meeting, the research steps and the timeline were presented and discussed.
The meeting brought together representatives of 22 Future Museum partners, including museums, culture & tourism authorities, suppliers and other stakeholders. The project partners are: Alimentarium Museum, Ars Electronica Linz, ART+COM, Canon, City of Cologne Museum Services, Siegerlandmuseum im Oberen Schloss, Guggenheim Bilbao, KHM-Museumsverband, MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, MAMCO Geneva, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Museum Brandhorst, phaeno Wolfsburg, PKF tourismexperts, MuseumLab of Pôle muséal de la Ville de Mons, Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, Schweizerisches Nationalmuseum, 7reasons Medien, Swiss Science Center Technorama, Wien 3420 aspern Development, WienTourismus and Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen.
In his welcome address, Lutz Henke, Culture Officer of visitBerlin, stressed the crucial role of the exchanges between culture, tourism and the wider visitor economy.
Sofia Widmann, Managing Director of MUSEUM BOOSTER and initiator of the Future Museum project, outlined the current challenges museums face. She pointed out that “Future Museum will be the major European research initiative in the museum field in the next two years – with a focus on best-practice initiatives and collaboration among the participating institutions. By working together, museums can create synergies and learn from each other.”
Vanessa Borkmann, Head of Future Museum Research at Fraunhofer IAO, presented the research roadmap of Future Museum, including the steps and the methodology which will be applied in the course of the next two years by Fraunhofer IAO.
Garance Reus-Deelder of Anne Frank House and Natasha Charlton White of Alimentarium provided insights into specific issues of their museums. The representatives of technological and consulting companies – SuperSocial, Khora Virtual Reality, United Screens, PKF tourismexperts, Molamil Aps, and Waltz Binaire – provided an overview of innovative technologies and approaches that can be applied by museums, among them:VR/AR, 3D Scanning & Presenting, AI, digital mapping, social media as well as yield & revenue management.
The overriding goal of the Future Museum project is to assist museums in comprehending and applying cutting-edge know-how and to create a network of museum leaders, culture & tourism authorities and other stakeholders for the exchange of ideas and collaboration. Fraunhofer IAO assumes research work within the project, while MUSEUM BOOSTER is responsible for the overall project, including organisation and coordination of the innovation network.
